About Us
The Bridgetown Hub aims to be the heart of our local community.
A Community Center for All
Through the provision of a range of services and programs, we welcome all community members regardless of age, gender, background, and family size or shape.
We invest in good facilities, equipment and team members to ensure that everyone who visits our centre and participates in an activity, enjoys their experience, makes new friends and learns some different skills.
Our services and programs are made possible with funding support from the Department of Communities’ Empowering Communities Program, the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes and other community grants.
Terminus History
The Terminus Hotel (former) was built in 1894 by Joseph Smith as a combined home, general store and boarding house. It was of a typical Victorian Georgian style, constructed of hand-made bricks from local clay. Joseph Smith was an ex-convict and pioneer of Bridgetown, of which he became an active community member. As a builder and carpenter, prior to becoming a shopkeeper, he also constructed several other local buildings.
In January 1898 Joseph Smith moved to a new home and leased the building out. It was converted into a hotel to maximise its position close to the new railway station and terminus of the Donnybrook-Bridgetown line, which opened later that year. Joseph Smith’s son Jack owned and operated the hotel from 1912-1922 before he entered into a political career. The next long term proprietor was Frederick Ellis, from 1923-1947.
There were various alterations and additions over the years, including in 1939 and possibly 1949. The building was bought by the Swan Brewery Co in 1967 and continued to be used as a hotel until 1975.
In 1976 the Swan Brewery donated the building to the town for a community centre. Most of the changes to the place occurred in 1990 and 2000-2006 in order to make the building suitable for its various community uses.
The Bridgetown Family & Community Centre have been working on the Conservation Management Plan since 2013, thanks to the funding of Lotterywest grants. Major repairs have been carried out, including storm water management to prevent flooding, new ceilings, all walls stripped and resurfaced, repairs to doorways, skirtings & architraves and restorations to old fireplaces. There are still future plans to repair the verandah and replace the roof.
